Abraham Harold Maslow (1908-1970) was an American psychologist who was best known for creating this hierarchy of needs. His theory of psychological health was predicated on fulfilling innate human needs by priority, thus resulting in self-actualization*. Self-actualization is the final stage of development that occurs when a person is able to take full advantage of their talents. Self-actualization has not been found to correlate with age, gender, income level, or race. Maslow stressed the importance of focusing on the positive qualities in people, as opposed to treating them as a “bag of symptoms.”
*self-actualization noun – the realization or fulfillment of one’s talents and potentialities, and is considered as a drive or need present in everyone
